The Wuppertal Schwebebahn and Bayer AG
The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world.It was built between 1897 and 1903. The suspension railway runs along a route of 13.3 kilometres, at a height of about 12 metres above the river Wupper. It is still in use today as a normal means of local public transport, moving around 25 million passengers annually.
The Bayer AG, founded in Wuppertal, has invented aspirin right here in 1897.
