Gerber Architekten is a German practice with national and international projects consisting of a team of approximately 170 highly-qualified staff with its head office in Dortmund and offices in Hamburg, Berlin, Riyadh and Shanghai. With 50 years of expertise our fields of work cover urban design, architecture, landscape design and interior design. Completed projects range from landscape architecture and urban redevelopment to high-rise buildings, from administrative buildings and stations to residential and university buildings and laboratories right through to cultural buildings.
Our international work is focusing particularly on Asia and the Middle East. Major construction projects such as the International Business Centre in Taiyuan and the Headquarters of one of the reputable Chinese High-Tech providers of mobile communication devices in Shanghai are currently under construction. Gerber Architekten also designs and coordinates the 450.000 m² large project NRW.Center in Chengdu.
Our services range from consulting, project development for all design stages – including cost and construction management – and also as general planners. Through the intensive communication with our clients we develop common goals in order to establish exciting and quality designs which are then constructed efficiently and economically.
Precise cost calculation and adherence to the budget are fundamental requirements for our work. Planning and construction time follow custom made construction schedules, which are set up and supervised by our experienced project management team.
With all of our projects, it is the client’s requirements that form the basis for the concept development of our architecture. Deriving ideas from a location’s distinctive features, history, topography and surrounding structures, the climate and site development, but also its energy and ecological concerns, of particular importance today, provide further parameters for our designs.
King Fahad National Library in Riyadh/Saudi Arabia
The new square building of the King Fahad National Library in Riyadh/Saudi Arabia encases the old library, which holds the archives like a treasure chest. The old roof covers now the reading room, whereas its newly designed dome remains visible above the flat roof of the new building. A three-dimensional steel wire construction serves as an external sun protection. Its white membrane interprets Arabic traditions technologically and culturally in a modern way.
HEHE International Centre in Taiyuan/China
The architectural design of the HEHE International Centre in Taiyuan/China is developed from the surrounding urban context. Between the two office towers where the main entrances are located, a public plaza is forming the „heart“ of the plot. Other urban functions such as cafe and bistro provide opportunities for people to stop by. The building itself is conceived as two strong towers complementing each other like brothers and are connected by two elevated angled links.
Yantian Port Trailer Service Centre in Shenzhen/China
The Port City Yantian is supposed to become a truck free zone. Therefore in the Shenzhen Harbour area a Trailer Service Centre is going to be developed right underneath the Wutong Mountain. In unison with the mountain, the building design by Gerber Architekten positions itself harmoniously in the environment like a fluid ribbon. A metal lamella facade encloses the upper parking levels. Truck services, customs service, a restaurant, offices and accommodations are located in the lower levels.
